Planned Parenthood New "SmartWheels" Van Takes Services to the Streets

Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic showed off its brand new 27-foot custom Winnebago outside the organization's New Rochelle clinic Tuesday morning. The van was paid for entirely by private donations totaling about $200,000.

New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson assisted Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic CEO Reina Schiffrin and others in a ribbon-cutting in the shadow of New Roc City, just as temps approached the 90° mark.

The van travels throughout the community to schools, shelters and health fairs with an eye to reaching those who need services like STD testing and birth control but may be reluctant to visit a clinic.

Last year Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic reached over 8,000 people and gave 857 HIV tests via two SmartWheels vans that travel through four counties including Westchester.
