I Don't Get It May 22, 2013 at 04:37 pm
Why does it cost so much for the average student in New Rochelle Public Schools )almost $11,000 perRead More child) when my children have gone to Catholic School all their lives at the cost of 35-60% less per child? (I will continue to eat pasta and drive an old car while others eat steak and drive Denali's)

It IS sad how many people did not vote. But it passed, so I have to look in the fall to see how muchRead More more I am paying so I can see how much I have to raise the rent on my tenants. Many of them think school taxes do not affect them and they vote yes. Well they have to pay too. I don't even have any kids in the school. It shouldn't all fall on me.
Aunt Sandy May 22, 2013 at 11:02 am
I think people don't think it matters whether they vote or not. The school budget always passes.Read More Plus only a small percentage of the school budget is not mandated by the state or the unions. It is a big percentage of our property taxes, but seems to be out of our control.
The Isaac E. Young Middle School Astronomy Club met Thursday, May 16, 2013, to talk about the moon and gaze at the stars.

Mr. Misner is an exemplary teacher whose students will remember this experience forever. Thanks,Read More too, to Jeff Wuebber, earth science teacher at New Rochelle HS for helping out. Joyce Kent Science Department Chair, NRHS

There is more good going on at Isaac Young than people know. This is just one example. Last year weRead More watched the transit of Venus from the same location!

Betsy, I take it from your remarks that we at least agree that Isaac needs TLC. I have made aRead More public commitment that should I be elected to the board I will make Isaac Young a personal priority to do what I can do help. I can do that as a board member. I cannot go beyond that personal commitment because, as you correctly noted, the board is a group of nine where no one board member has the final say. A board member must persuade other board members to achieve consensus. I believe consensus is possible on the need to provide TLC to Isaac. All of our public school students meet up at New Rochelle High School in their academic career. What happens along the way before they arrive impacts the overall learning environment at the high school and is thus a concern for all students and parents. If we want to address the minority graduation rate issue we need to support struggling students before they get to high school. A majority of those struggling minority students who are not graduating (on time or at all) are coming from Isaac. An improved Isaac has ripple effects throughout the community starting with the students, the parents and then the broader community with a positive impact on South End property values and a balancing of the tax load borne by residential property owners in the North End. I do not think a single Board member has the power to change a school but I do think a single Board member has the power to change minds.

Of course James you would agree that's your buddy....You don't deserve to work for children....YouRead More are a disgrace to journalism and don't know the the first thing about family, morals or values. You will ruin New Rochelle!! You have no compassion for anyone!!

What a great idea! Best of luck to you in creating a beautiful place for the children and plants toRead More grow, in understanding that we must coexist harmoniously with nature and with each other.

Why were only 3 schools put in lockdown??? Why weren't all of them??? Were all new Rochelle schoolsRead More aware and told instantly about the potential treat? I never heard of this til I saw an old video about it in a montage on channel 12 news and googled this. I have a son in school in new Rochelle Snd was not notified. Wondering why and what the protocol os

People put this comment on facebook ,twitter and every wibsite if posible.I think trinity elementryRead More school ,Isacc E.young middle school and jeffreson elementry school should have at least two police outside these schools to prottect the schools. At Trinity there has also once been "suspicious"man before to so that why I am saying that these three schools should have two police outside to protect the schools.I feel a little bit upset and dissopottint on new rochelle police. (if you dont speak english here it is in spanish.si usted no entinde ingles a ke esta en espanol) Yo penso que new rochelle deve de poner policas a fuera de las esculas para que la escuelas esten mas seguras .Y al menoa a ga dos policas afuera de las escuals.Especial mente a las escuelas ,trinity elementry school, jeffresson elementry school y Isacc E .Young middle school .

Who's going to benefit from the dorm? I bet there's a chosen developer & we should know ifRead More this developer has donated money to the mayor or any council members. NR doesn't need 5 to 7 story structures in this area, its going to kill the residential aspects of all the neighborhoods in the area. Plus this Iona College so no tax revenue at all to the schools or city. How is it that the college doesn't property taxes anyway? Not much of a church use in my mind.
Robert McCaffrey April 11, 2013 at 12:22 pm
Please remember, this is not just about Iona College and the dorms. New Rochelle’s Mayor andRead More Iona College created a hand selected committee and yet they can’t get it right. Why, because they don’t listen to the people, they don’t listen to each other. It is about the processes they use along with The City of New Rochelle. New Rochelle has a bad habit of spot zoning and not looking out for the interests of the citizens and neighbors of the many projects they approve. Look at the past deals, abatements, loop-holes and extensions given to Iona College, Avalon, Cappeli, Trump, New Roc, Monroe College and Forest City/Ratners Echo Bay. These poor planning and development processes are taxing the citizens beyond their means. Done right and working together, it can and must work.

Sounds completely out of control. How is this ratio justified? Goes a long way to explaining aRead More 500% tax rate increase v. 30% assessable value decrease over the past 20 years: New Rochelle School Tax Rate Per $1,000 in Assessed Value 1990: $139.578 2000: $319.825 2010: $633.435 school/$14.557 library = $647.992 2012: $681.826 school/$15.908 library = $697.806 2013 Projection for the school tax rate (excl. library) per New Rochelle Patch: $715.24 Would love to have this explained in detail by the powers that be. Or maybe they have explained it and I'm not smart enough to find the explanation.

I just read a report from the Authorities Budget Office that the NR IDA has given out $59 million ofRead More tax abatements on which it receives $7 million in PILOT payments meaning the city, county & schools are collectively losing $52 million on all of our developments. Schools comprise about 2/3 of your tax bill so the district is losing about $34.5 million every year. How'd the IDA get so out of hand? http://www.abo.ny.gov/ Developement should be fair to all, but in NR it seems if you don't get a tax break you're not competitive & doomed to failure. And now Bramson wants to dole out another tax abatement to Forest City to build Echo Bay, but I feel if it can't be built paying the same taxes as homeowners, then don't build it! And that's not even bringing up the subject of the city yard which move alone is going to break New Rochelle's bank.
Billy March 12, 2013 at 04:26 pm
But I'm not conviced more money is the answer and our taxes are already sky high. Years and years ofRead More 10% increases have had a crushing effect. Plenty of administrators, coordinators and facilitors running around the school halls too. But really teacher salaries & pensions are what's out of control.
Latino U College Access March 1, 2013 at 04:20 am
We thank you for your comment Teleman. As a nonprofit organization we are limited by how much weRead More can do. The mission of our organization is to help Latino students attain a college education. However, We welcome all participants and our handouts are in English and Spanish. Most Latino HS students prefer to speak English but their parents have limited English skills. We share information in Spanish so that parents can clearly understand the details and specifics of this important topic and are able to help their children fulfill their college goals. I hope you can see the positive results that can come from this and for the future of our community...whether hispanic or non-hispanic. thank you.

More devisiveness- how about just helping everyone of all races and ethnic backrounds? And why areRead More people still in need of spanish speaking workshops? If you come here, you should assimilate, not expect to be catered to!
