Black Cats, Chamber Music and Sidewalk Sale

Here are some things to do in and around New Rochelle this weekend, August 16-18, 2013.

1. So what seasonal vegetable do you have a hankering for? Corn? Tomatoes? Well, fresh produce and other goodies are available from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Down to Earth Farmers Market in New Rochelle (North Avenue in front of the high school) and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the New Rochelle Grand Market on Library Green, Lawton and Huguenot streets.

2. It's Black Cat Appreciation Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the New Rochelle Humane Society. There will be special fees when adopting a black (or black and white) cat. There will also be face painting, baked goods as well as a raffle for all adopters, with the lucky winner receiving a lottery ticket basket. The New Rochelle Human Society is located at 70 Portman Rd. in New Rochelle.

3. The 2nd Annual Caroga Lake Chamber Music Festival comes to the Old Dutch Church, 430 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, at 4 p.m. Saturday, featuring instrumental artists from premier conservatories and music schools. This free concert will showcase ensembles performing repertoire including Mendelssohn Octet, Barber Adagio for Strings, Shostakovich Octet, and chamber music shorts from Bridge, Britten, Elgar and the Great American Songbook. The festival showcases artists from across the country who attend/have attended premiere music conservatories and music schools including the Juilliard School, Cleveland Institute, Eastman School, Rice Shepherd School, San Francisco Conservatory, Yale School of Music and Carnegie Mellon, in addition to faculty at San Diego State School of Music. The young artists have appeared on NPR's From the Top and won various prizes at international solo and chamber music competitions.

4. Tarrytown Merchant Sidewalk Sale, Broadway and Main Street, takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, August 18, rain or shine. Take advantage of some amazing End of Summer Deals from your favorite local shops and restaurants at this year’s Tarrytown Merchant Sidewalk Sale. Featuring: jewelry, pet items, toys, soccer gear, antiques, natural products, hardware items, arts, gifts, food and more.

5. The Lions Club Summer Concert will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, August 18, at Jack Devito Memorial Park, Veterans Road, Yorktown. The Yorktown Lions Club is presenting The Capris. The event is free and open to the public. Food will be served by the Yorktown Lions Club. As part of a food drive, residents are asked to bring an items which the Yorktown Lions Club can donate to local food banks.
