Traffic Alert, Beauty and the Beast and Opera in the Park

Here are some of the things you need to know for the week ahead in and around New Rochelle.

1. Traffic alert! A deck replacement project for the Hutchinson River Parkway is destined to snarl traffic when it begins Tuesday, August 6. Boston Post Road in Pelham Manor will be closed at the Hutch forcing detours onto I-95. It's scheduled to be completed by Saturday, August 10. For details, see our story.

2. The New Rochelle Public Library's Disney Hit Parade continues at 6 p.m. Monday, August 5 with Beauty and the Beast, the Academy Award-winning animated film based on a French fairy tale. New Rochelle native Alan Menken won two Oscars for Beauty and the Beast: Best Original Score and Best Original Song (with Howard Ashman) for the title song. The free film will be shown in the Ossie Davis Theater at the library, 1 Library Plz.

3. The New Rochelle Opera will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 7 at Hudson Park as part of the Emil Paolucci Summer Sounds Concert Series. They will perform sounds of classic opera and operetta, along with some Broadway favorites. For details, go here.

4. The Ridge Hill Summer Music Series offering this week is a James Taylor tribute: Shower the People. The free concert is at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 8. For more information, click here.

5. Jazz vocalist Glenda Davenport and her trio will perform at Alvin & Friends 
restaurant at 9:30 p.m. Friday, August 9. The restaurant is located at 14 Memorial Highway in New Rochelle. Click here for more.
