Obamacare, School Board Meeting and Documentary

Here are a few things you need to know for the week beginning Sept. 30

1. Tuesday, Oct. 1 is the first day Americans can sign up for medical insurance plans through exchanges set up under the Affordable Care Act. For more information, see this article. Health navigators are available to help you through the process. There are three locations in New Rochelle: Westchester County Health Department, 7th floor, 145 Huguenot St., 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. , Monday through Friday, walk-in; Planned Parenthood, 247-249 North Ave., 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays, 914-813-5192, by appointment; New Rochelle Public Library, 1 Library Plz., 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays, walk-in.

2. Find out what Common Core standards are and how they will affect your child in school Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Eye Level Learning Center, 1299-C North Ave. (Quaker Ridge Shopping Center) in New Rochelle. The free session starts at 7 p.m. Reservations are requested. Call 914-632-1047.

3. As of Sept. 28, Indian Point Nuclear Reactor became the first facility in the United States to operate without a license. There will be a panel discussion from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Rockland Community College in Suffern. The panel will include actor Alec Baldwin, Hudson Riverkeeper Paul 
Gallay and medical experts. It's $10 for the general public. RCC is located at 145 College Rd., Suffern.

4. The New Rochelle School District board of education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1 at City Hall, 515 North Ave. The agenda can be found here

5. Maid in America, a documentary about three Latina immigrants working as
nannies and housekeepers in Los Angeles, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday at the New Rochelle Public Library, 1 Library Plz. The free film reveals the challenges these women face as they pursue the American Dream, their significant roles in
American households, and the globalization of motherhood.
