Thank God That's Over!

NFL Combine

Now that the combine is over we all have a general idea of the skills from the invitees. I feel like Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater were the stand out QBs even though they performed just as well as expected. The big news is the analysis of Johnny Manziel, who came into the Combine with a huge question mark on his back. Coming in without the height, weight, wing span or footwork of a prototypical quarterback, it was his quickness in the 40 yard dash and his elusiveness in the QB drills that got the coaches talking. I truly think he will perform better in the individual workouts for the teams that want to take a look at him. Drew Brees and Russell Wilson are just as short as Johnny Football, but Manziel has that innate ability to avoid the tackle. While he might drop to the 2nd, 3rd or 4th round Manziel would make a good fit on the Jacksonville Jaguars. We know MJD is an aging running back and Manziel is not a Pro Set QB, but with Johnny Football as a starter and Denard “Shoelace” Robinson as the top back, the Read Option would be a success. Think about it, the fastest quarterback and running back tandem in the league running offenses they both ran in college. This could take that awful offense out of the basement.  The other big disappointment of the combine was Michael Sam who ran the worst 40 yard dash of this life. Sam under performed in the outside linebacker position drills which I anticipated in my last blog. As stated previously Sam is a “tweener,” too small to play defensive end but too big to play outside linebacker and asking him to drop into coverage when he doesn’t have the instincts for it is asking too much. I knew from the get go that Sam would not be a first round pick, like Manziel, if Sam produces in the individual work outs he could be a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

Trade Rumors

Many of you may not know that Boomer Esiason reported on twitter that the Rangers Captain Ryan Callahan will be traded for the Lightning’s Martin St. Louis. While I agree that Callahan will be traded before the deadline, I don’t think it will be for the aging St. Louis. The Ranger’s Captain’s price tag is too high for the Blueshirts as Callahan will ask for a seven year, 45 million dollar deal. The offer isn’t even close to what the Rangers want to sign him for. The hardest part about the speculation is who would the Rangers get in return? I believe St. Louis is out of the question, Glen Sather might be willing to trade the team captain, but that’s not what Steve Yzerman wants to do. As the deadline gets closer the rumor mill will churn out tons of falsehoods, but just remember, Callahan will not be a Ranger next year.

Trivia

Last week’s answer was Citius – Altius – Fortius

This week’s question is …

This baseball player was voted MVP in the National League in 1961, the MVP in the American League in 1966, and then went on to manage teams in both the National and American Leagues. Who was he?
