Trio of Blue Angels Named Women's Basketball All-HVIAC

The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) announced its Womens’ Basketball All-HVIAC honorees recently, and three College of New Rochelle players, juniors Alyssa Pechin (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of Victory Academy) and Jah-Leah Ellis (Harlem, NY/Hun School of Princeton), and sophomore Jasmine Brandon (Jersey City, NJ/St. Anthony), were recognized by the conference for their performances in the 2013-14 season.

Pechin, who also earned All-Conference honors as a freshman, averaged 11.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per contest for the Blue Angels.  She led the team in assists (99), steals (59), three-pointers (32) and free throw percentage (76.2%).  The guard tallied double-figure scoring games 18 times, including a stretch of 11 straight midway through the season.  She led the team in assists 14 times and steals 12 times, with season-highs of eight and six, respectively.  In a historic win over St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn in the regular season finale, Pechin became just the sixth CNR player, and first since 1986, to achieve 1,000 career points.

Ellis had a breakout season in her first year at The College of New Rochelle.  The forward averaged 20.0 points, 15.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.2 blocks per game and twice was named HVIAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.  Ellis was named HVIAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, an honor she also received at the season-opening Bryn Mawr Women’s College Tip-Off Tournament.  She was also named to the All-Tournament team at the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament.  A threat both scoring and rebounding, Ellis posted a team-high 19 double-doubles, including 11 games with 15 or more rebounds and five with 20 or more.  Offensively, she reached double-figures in scoring in 22 of the 23 games she appeared in, with 13 games with 20 or more and four where she topped the 30 point mark.  Her all around talent was exemplified with two 30-point, 20-rebound games, the first time that had been accomplished by a Blue Angel since the 2007-08 season.  Both her double-double total and her rebounding average ranks her second in NCAA Division III.

Brandon earns All-HVIAC status for the second time after averaging a team-leading 22.3 points per game, adding 10.4 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 1.2 assists and 0.9 blocks per contest.  She was named Most Valuable Player of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament and to the All-Tournament team at the Bryn Mawr Women’s College Tip-Off Tournament, with The College of New Rochelle winning both tournaments.  The center tallied 13 double-doubles and 15 games with 20 or more points, including three with 40 or more points.  Her three 40+ scoring games led NCAA Division III and her 47 point performance in a road win over Albertus Magnus established a new program record.  A three-time HVIAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, Brandon was twice named to the D3Hoops.com National Team of the Week.  A Blue Angel had never been recognized with that distinction before.  She ranks among the national leaders in scoring and double-doubles.

The trio helped lead The College of New Rochelle to the team’s first HVIAC Tournament Championship and a 16-9 overall record.  The 16 wins is the most since the 1998-99 season, marks the team’s first winning record since the 1999-2000 season, and is the fifth straight season the program has increased its win total. En route to the championship, the Blue Angels defeated St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn, twice, snapping a 16 game skein that dated back to January 17, 2000, and Albany College of Pharmacy, a team the Blue Angels had not defeated in seven previous meetings.
