New Rochelle Library Wraps Up Summer Reading With Party

New Rochelle children celebrated their summer reading program Wednesday at the New Rochelle Public library.

They were entertained by Tom Stankus, who performs as T-Bone—America's Musical Pied Piper.

Kathleen Cronin, the library's head of children's services, said there were 633 children registered for the reading program and about 4,000 books were read.

"The children get a certificate for completing the summer reading and a coupon for a free ice cream," she said.

During the summer, the children put up a colorful picture on the library's windows for every book they read. They also get prizes for reading a certain number of books.

Cronin said it was important for children to continue reading during the summer months.

"At their age, they need to keep their skills up," she said. "It's harder to pick it back up if they don't."
