Building Tiny Ferris Wheels in New Rochelle

Kids seem drawn to Legos, so it was no wonder the Bricks 4 Kidz workshop at the Huguenot Children's Library was packed Monday.

Aaron Tang and Diane Kobrin gave about 15 children the opportunity to build a ferris wheel. Depending on which one they wanted to build, it could have a tiny motor to make it move.

But it wasn't just an opportunity to have fun with the colorful connectable building blocks. There was some learning to do.

Kobrin told the children that the ferris wheel is named after its inventor—George Washington Gale Ferris Jr.—and that the first one was built for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.

"It took 20 minutes for the wheel to go around one time," she said.

The children were then familiarized with some technical terms they would be employing while building the ferris wheel, including axle, inertia, force. They then used information from a Kindle to help them with the project.

The Bricks 4 Kidz workshops are part of the "Old Fashioned Summer Fun" program at the Huguenot Children's Library, 794 North Ave. The workshops are on Mondays and Thursday. For more information, call 914-632-8954.
