Three Study Skills Lessons from Yogi Berra

Study skills tips can come from many sources, such as baseball legend Yogi Berra. Here are eight great tips based on his wit and wisdom.

Former American Major League Baseball manager Yogi Berra is one of the most-quoted celebrities around the world. He is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Berra always kept an optimistic attitude. In short, Yogi Berra was no quitter. What kind of advice would he have for a student struggling with making the time to study?

“It ain’t over ’til it’s over.” Many people do give up too soon. The message here is to never give up. While there is still even the slightest chance of success, we must try to succeed. If you look for an excuse to quit, then surely you will find it. But if you always look to press on toward the goal, more often than not you will make it to the end.

“Never answer an anonymous letter.” You probably would never answer a letter, text, or phone call without knowing who it’s from. Similarly, you shouldn’t sit down to take a test without being fully prepared and knowing what you’re doing. Read and study the assigned texts so you are familiar enough with the topic that you can answer any question about it. Don’t rely on luck to pass an exam. Make sure you have covered all bases when it comes to knowing the topic.

“It’s déjà vu all over again.” You’ve heard it over and over again from teachers and parents: Go to class, do your homework, study, be prepared. These are the keys to success! You are wasting your own time if you just turn up to class without preparing. Be sure to pre-read and complete your homework as required.

Yogi Berra’s quotes are worth remembering. His success came from holding on to a positive attitude and never giving up on his goals. Reach for the highest goals in your life and don’t stop after you’ve reached them. Hold on to a positive attitude, like Yogi Berra, and do everything you can to achieve your dreams and your goals in your life.
