Westchester Flames Soccer Team Drops a Close Season Opener

The Westchester Flames next game is Saturday, May 17, at City Park Stadium in New Rochelle against the Montreal Impact U23.

The following recap from the team's opening season loss on May 10 is from Westchester Flames F.C.:

The Westchester Flames opened their 2014 USL PDL season with a home loss to the Seacoast United Phantoms by a score of 1-0. Seacoast scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick that was converted by forward Terence Carter in the 21st minute.

The Flames battled hard throughout the game, but were unable to generate much offense. Seacoast had some good scoring opportunities that they were unable to convert to increase their lead. Overall, Seacoast had 12 shots to only 3 from Westchester, which told the story of the game.

The game took a nasty turn in the 78th minutes, when Flames defender committed a hard foul, which resulted in a red card issued by referee David Breckner.

Several members of the Flames including: goalkeeper Thomas Spenser, defender Luke Salmon, midfielders Alan Reiter and Kristian Alexieff, and forwards Lucas McBride and Jaret Petras, made their USL PDL debuts.

Flames coach Gus Skoufis was disappointed with the result, but happy with his team overall. Skoufis said, "We battled hard throughout, but we just couldn't get anything going offensively. Many of the guys just arrived home from college and they haven't had a chance to practice together much."

"In the coming weeks, we have more players who'll become available to us as their college semester ends. We'll be working very hard in practice to help what we feel is a talented group of players become a team that can play with anybody in the league. It won't be easy, but it's a challenge we're looking forward to."

The Westchester Flames continue the 2014 USL PDL season at home versus the Montreal Impact U23 team on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 PM at City Park Stadium in New Rochelle, N.Y.
