North Avenue Mile Brings Runners to New Rochelle

Organizers said this is the first of what will become an annual event.

About 300 runners and walkers turned out Sunday for the first North Avenue Mile times 1-mile race.

Sponsored by NewRo Runners, the race began at the Thomas Paine Cottage and ended at New Rochelle City Hall.

Organizer Steven Stein couldn't have been more pleased.

"I am beyond happy," he said. "I am absolutely thrilled: at the turnout, at the weather, at the camaraderie."

Stein said there were six waves of runners, starting with families and walkers. After the finish line, participants got a goodie bag and could visit the health and fitness expo set up on the grounds of City Hall.

Mayor Noam Bramson said it was a wonderful event that was a part of a year-long series of happenings commemorating the city's 325th Anniversary.

"What is really wondeful about the week and the year as a whole is that each of the each of the different activities appeals to a different portion of our community," he said.

The North Avenue Mile race brought together people of all different skills levels, Bramson said.

"That is also the spirit of the organization NewRo Runners," he said.
