The Ursuline School hosted a signing event Tuesday morning for the sensational softball player Mary McCabe. McCabe had several programs after her as she was recruited by Providence and Bucknell but in the end the senior decided to become a Lafayette Leopard.

“Lafayette is a great academic school, and it is division one sports,” said McCabe on her decision.

McCabe describes herself simply as a scrappy middle infielder who defends well and can get a key hit, but Ursuline’s Coach John Pirone was much more garrulous in his description of the young ballplayer.

“Lafayette is getting a superior athlete,”  Pirone went on to say, “I consider her a five tool player. She has a great attitude and she will be a major addition to that program.”

There is a good shot that McCabe will be getting a scholarship to play softball and the senior says she has already spoken to her new head coach and she will have an opportunity to prove herself on the field immediately.

Another athlete will also be signing her letter of intent to participate in college athletics next season. Superior swimmer Rachel Kessler from New Rochelle High School will be committing to Arkansas in a 2:30 p.m. ceremony.
