Daily Sports Digest: New Rochelle Softball Opens Playoff Push Tonight

Yesterday Section 1 for the Class AA, A, B, and C playoffs.

Assuming the weather doesn’t affect the schedule too much the Class AA and A outbracket games will be played tonight and the Class AA, A and B first round games will be played tomorrow with the Championship games being scheduled for June 2 in Nanuet.

New Rochelle begins the tournament as the 16th seed and they will be home tonight against Ossining. The winner will head to top seeded John Jay (EF) tomorrow.

Ursuline enters the Class A tournament as the third seed and tomorrow they will play the winner of tonight’s Sleepy Hollow-Saunders game.

College Sports Notebook:

Jaspers set for MAAC Championships:

The Manhattan College baseball team is scheduled to meet Rider University this afternoon as it opens defense of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship.

The top-seeded Jaspers (29-24, 18-6 MAAC) and fourth-seeded Broncs (21-32, 13-11) are set to square off at Joe Bruno Stadium in Troy at 3 p.m.

Joe Rock of Carmel, a junior outfielder, is batting .286 with 13 RBI in 35 games for the Jaspers, while freshman right-hander Mike Scarinci of Nanuet is pitching to a 5.12 ERA with a 5-4 record. The Pearl River alum has an outstanding 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 36 Ks and 12 bases on balls.

Senior right-hander Mike Giordano of Bedford is 2-4 with a crisp 3.69 ERA in eight starts. The Fox Lane grad also has shown sharp control, with 25 strikeouts and 10 walks.

Manhattan won the program’s fourth regular-season championship in the last five seasons under the leadership of first-year head coach Jim Duffy.

The Jaspers will face either No. 2 Canisius or No. 3 Fairfield on day two of the double-elimination tournament.

The MAAC Champion will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Mortarboard musings

• George Mason University southpaw Chris O’Grady of Congers, a junior relief pitcher out of Clarkstown North HS, has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association semifinalist list for the Dick Howser Trophy. The award, given to the top player in collegiate baseball, will be presented on June 15 on opening day of the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Earlier this season O’Grady was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award watch list, given to the top relief pitcher in the country. Appearing in 23 games in relief for the Patriots this season, O’Grady has posted a 0.54 ERA with 14 saves, a mark that ties the school record for single-season saves. In 33.1 innings of work he has struck out 46 while allowing just two earned runs and walking just 16 batters.
• Rutgers University junior third baseman Patrick Kivlehan of West Nyack has been voted the Big East Player of the Year, as determined by the league coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own player. He joins Darren Fenster (2000) and Todd Frazier (2007) as the third Scarlet Knight to earn the honor. (Ed. • Women’s soccer player Rebecca Delphin of Dobbs Ferry, a sophomore, was one of four student-athletes recognized as Award Recipients and another three were inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) at the Mercy College Honors Reception and Awards Dinner. Freshman Danielle Jones (field hockey), sophomore Elizabeth Rjedkin (women’s lacrosse) and sophomore Jesse Wood (men’s lacrosse) made up the quartet of award recipients, while Delphin, Rjedkin and sophomore Syntia Malicka (volleyball) are the trio of NSCS inductees.
• Junior Nick Sica of Staten Island shot a 71 to help the Manhattanville College golf team finish in 29th place after day two of the NCAA Division III Championships at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL.
• Junior Anthony Pisano, a graduate of Clarkstown North HS, keyed the pitching staff on the Concordia College baseball team, going 6-4 with a second-best 3.18 ERA as the Clippers went 12-31. Freshman infielder Ryan Romano of Port Chester broke into the lineup and batted .227 in 15 games, while junior infielder Michael Barbetto of New City, a Clarkstown South alum, hit .237 with three stolen bases in 24 games. Senior infielder Yonatan Rodriguez of Tarrytown, who was graduated from Sleepy Hollow HS, batted .266 with 12 RBI in 38 games.
• ’s third basemen Christ Burke was named the MAAC Player of the Year yesterday after the senior hit .351 with 11 homer runs and 50 RBI in 53 games this season. Catcher James Beck and Eric Capowski were both named to the All-MAAC Second Team.
