Shepard, Marte in the swim

Sophomore Andrew Shepard of West Nyack continued his standout season in the distance freestyle events as the College of Mount Saint Vincent’s men’s swimming team lost to Mount Saint Mary College, 71-49, in Newburgh.

Shepard, an alum of Clarkstown South, was runner-up in the 1,000-yard event with a time of 12:30.47, and then won the 500-yard race in 5:56.26.

Also standing out was freshman Alex Marte of Yonkers, who posted a double victory in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.03) and 100-yard butterfly (1:00.59).

The setback dropped the Dolphins to 1-7 in dual-meet competition, and 0-4 against Skyline Conference opponents.

The Dolphins return to the pool on a winter training trip to Florida, before resuming the schedule on Jan. 27 against Drew University in Madison, NJ, at 6 p.m.

Also competing for the Dolphins is freshman Juan Espinal of New Rochelle, in the backstroke and freestyle events.

The women’s team, which continues to struggle, lost to Hunter, 102-80, at the Mark Twain Pool Complex in Yonkers.

The Dolphins (1-10), who are also on a Florida training trip, hope to start something new on Jan. 21 when they meet Drew University in Madison, N.J.

Hunter (9-3) was led by siblings Juliette and Charlotte Collazo of Monsey, who are graduates of Spring Valley HS.

Charlotte, a freshman, was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle against the Dolphins, and helped the Hawks win the 200-yard freestyle relay; sophomore Juliette,  second in the 100-yard backstroke, was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay quartet.

Hunter hosts John Jay College (4-2) on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the North pool.

Breaking into the lineup

Freshman guard Bergelis Louis of Nyack, a graduate of Ramapo HS, has appeared in four games for the women’s basketball team at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
