Eastchester boy's lacrosse defended their home field Friday as they beat New Rochelle 14-11. Tom Cirillo’s record setting season continues as he scored seven goals and two assists in the win. Rob Carinci had four goals as Matt Power added two.

Defensively the Eagles were lead by Joe Arcidiacono’s 22 saves and picked up 10 ground balls.

College Sports Notebook:

Chris O’Grady of Congers, a stalwart of the pitching staff at George Mason University, is among a group of 45 players who have been named to the midseason watch list for the eighth National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, give to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.

O’Grady, an alum of Clarkstown North, has made 19 appearances for the Patriots and tops the staff with a 0.33 ERA in 28 innings. The southpaw has allowed just 13 hits, with no homers, no triples and just one double.

The Patriots (28-16) host Richmond on Tuesday in Fairfax, VA, to open a five game home stand that continues on Wednesday against Maryland.

San Diego’s Michael Wagner headlines the nominees for the award.

Wagner leads the nation with 18 saves in 22 appearances. He has pitched 35 innings with 31 strikeouts and is 1-1 with 1.03 ERA.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released on June 6, prior to the start of the NCAA Super Regional tournament competition.

The NCBWA’s all-America Committee will select the winner, with this year’s recipient to be announced during the college world series.

The NCBWA, founded in 1962, presents the Dick Howser Trophy to the Nation’s top player. It also selects all-American teams for all Divisions, a Division I Freshman all-American team, Division I and III Players of the Week, Division I District Players of the Year and Division III Players of the year.

Mortarboard musings

• Frank Salerno of New City recorded his 34th stolen base, a team record, and senior right-hander Joe Ferrara of Congers went a strong seven and two-thirds innings as the St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team defeated host Mercy College, 10-3. The win gave St. Thomas a team-record of 30 victories. The Spartans (30-15, 15-5 East Coast Conference) retained a share of the conference lead. The Mavericks lost their 16th straight, falling to 6-35, 4-19. The Spartans travel to Greenvale for a first-place showdown with C.W. Post on Wednesday. The Mavericks meet Nyack College today at 5 p.m. at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, and on Wednesday hit the road to challenge Bridgeport at West Haven (CT) High School, also at 5 p.m.

• The Manhattan College baseball team, coming off a 11-0 loss at Texas Christian University (26-15), look to rebound on Tuesday when the Jaspers travel to cross-Bronx rival Fordham University (19-28) at 7 p.m. Mike Giordano of Bedford, an alum of Fox Lane HS, is third on the Jaspers’ pitching staff with a 4.67 ERA.
• The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team ended its season with a 9-7 loss to Georgetown (9-7, 5-3), which will be the No. 4 seed in the Big East Tournament.  Senior midfielder Ali Steinberg of Suffern led the team with 47 points on 31 goals and 16 assists, while sophomore Amanda Trendell of Yorktown Heights saw action in six games for Rutgers, which went 9-7, including a 4-4 mark in the Big East.
• WCC starting pitcher Chris Fumasoli of Rye pitched a nine inning complete game shutout against Sussex Community College last week. Fumasoli threw 114 pitches, struck out seven and scattered four hits the win.
• After a very successful season, the Monroe Mustangs had five players sign with NCAA programs. The latest domino to fall was Orlando Sanchez who just signed with the St. John Red Storm.

After being beaten soundly in game one the Knicks will head to the Heat and square off tonight in Miami at 7 p.m. asked how you thought the Knicks would do this post season, unfortunately most people feel the Knicks will be done in the first round.
