Daily Sports Digest: Berni, Combs Honorable Mention For Golden Dozen

Christmas 2011 is in the books and obviously Jet fans were on Santa’s naughty list and fans of the Knicks and Giants were good this year as they got what they wanted this holiday season. Now football fans await the start of the playoffs and while all the Giants need to do is win to get in the Jets road to the post season is much more complicated and Gang Green will need a little help from several other teams if they want to be playing passed week 17.

The list is out for the Golden Dozen scholar-athletic team which is recognized every year in late January by the Westchester Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Iona Prep’s Matt Berni and Justin Combs both made this year’s honorable mention list.

The 13th annual Slam Dunk High School Basketball Tournament kicks off today at noon at the Westchester County Center. Top programs from across New York State are scheduled to compete in the four day tournament, and the halftime games will be played by teams from some of Westchester’s youth programs. Parking costs $5 and the tickets for the games are $5 per day. Check out the brackets for the week’s full schedule.

Score: Iona Prep Won 3-0

Highlights: Phil Logerfo scored twice for Iona Prep and Jack McDermott found the back of the net once as the Gaels cruised to victory. David Comender picked up the shut out thanks to hiss 23 saves.
