Cheerleading is a Sport, Says American Medical Association

By approving the new policy, the AMA is suggesting better safety measures in cheerleading.

The American Medical Association has declared that cheerleading is a sport because of its “rigors and risks,” according to the Associated Press.

The nation’s large doctors’ association adopted that policy during its annual meeting in Chicago this week.

The AMA declared that “cheerleading is as rigorous as many other activities that high schools and the NCAA consider sports.”

By approving the new policy, the AMA is suggesting better safety measures in cheerleading.

The New York State Board of Regents voted in April to recognize cheerleading as an official interscholastic sport.

The American Academy of Pediatrics approved a similar policy two years ago.

If you have any doubt about the competition in the field of Cheer go see one of their competitions!! You will be amazed at the talent these kids have!! And the difficulty of their routines. These competitions are judged by professional judges that have to pass rigorous tests.... not just a bunch of teachers who give them a GRADE!! The HS Cheer Competition RULE Book is another source of information if you'd care to google it and see just what is scored and how! HS Cheer Teams practice 5 days a week and compete in an average of 8-10 competitions a season. Not ALL schools enter competitions, not all schools have enough kids to even put together a team... but MOST DO! And they work as hard as any other varsity team. Way to go NY!! It's about time!!! Most other states have had CL listed as a SPORT for a number of years!!

Replace "Cheer" with Marching Band...talent. difficult routines. practice a lot. Yep. Is Marching Band a sport? Nope. Neither is cheerleading. Nobody is saying cheerleading is not athletic, or whatever. But that doesn't make it a sport...

Who will cheer them on? Will there be cheerleaders for the cheerleaders?
