New Rochelle School Board Members Train for the Future

School board members were reimbursed for a workshop on searching for a new superintendent.

An item on the agenda of Tuesday's New Rochelle School District Board of Education meeting raised a few eyebrows and some questions.

The resolution was to authorize reimbursement for actual related expenses for board members who attended a workshop Sept. 29, sponsored by the Westchester-Putnam School Boards Association.

The title of the workshop was "The Superintendency and the Superintendent Search Process."

Board President Sara Richmond said she's been getting a few calls about that, adding she didn't realize how people might think there will be a change in administration.

"The Westchester-Putnam School Boards Association does a lot of training," she said, "and we encourage our board members to do a lot of training.

"This one just happened to be on the rotation at this time," Richmond said.

The board members who went had not been part of the search five years ago which resulted in hiring Superintendent Richard Organisciak, she said.

Other workshops board members have attended included setting board priorities, reviewing and evaluating superintendents and using media and communications. An upcoming workshop will be on handling diversity, something that Richmond said is important for New Rochelle.
