New Rochelle HS Chorus Tries Mattress Sale as Fundraiser

Mattresses will be available in all sizes and price ranges.

Need a mattress? Then head over to New Rochelle High School Saturday and help out the chorus.

In what seems to be a growing trend—at least based on a quick Google search—the New Rochelle High School Chorus will be selling name brand mattresses at 30 percent to 60 percent retail prices from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the school located at 265 Clove Rd.

Choral teacher Derrick James said he found out about the fundraising method when he received a flyer about it.

"I said, 'Mattresses?' James said, adding that he checked into it and it seems that it can be successful.

Floor models of the mattresses will be on display Saturday. The mattresses will be available in all sizes and price ranges, and delivery can be arranged.

The chorus posted an event listing on New Rochelle Patch which said one can get $50 off the purchase with a copy of post.

James said the chorus is trying to raise money for a trip to South Africa in July, which will cost $4,300 per student,

"We have to raise a lot of money," he said. "Any contribution would help out."

The mattress sale is just one of the strategies the chorus is using to help fund the trip.

James said that they will in the future be selling candles and candy and will have a big concert in the spring.

Anyone wishing to contribute, besides buying a mattress, can send a check made payable to Young Artists of New Rochelle to the attention of James at the high school, 265 Clove Rd., New Rochelle, NY 10801.
