About $75,000 is needed for the project.

A state-of-the-art greenhouse could be built at Jefferson Elementary School in New Rochelle if the funds can be raised.

The greenhouse is estimated to cost $75,000 and will represent and unify the diverse cultures of the schoolchildren who attend Jefferson.

A fundraising event, which is being called a "happy hour," will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, May 3 at LeFevre Park (Five Islands). Donations from local vendors will be auctioned and raffled.

Principal Kimmerly Nieves said the initiative was intended to strengthen the bond between those who study in, work at, live near and run a business hear the school.

"Families of the students who attend our school originated in different parts of the world, yet coincidentally, most share longstanding ties to the land," she said. "Our hope is that the greenhouse will stand as a symbol for unity, brining together the entire Jefferson School community to nurture and care for the natural environment."
