The Top Spot:

New Rochelle hosted Mamaroneck’s lacrosse team Monday and the Huguenots won 6-5.

Matt Junious led New Rochelle with a hat trick and Dennis Spencer scored twice and assisted on another. Mario Diaz had 15 saves in the win.

Scott Greenberg and Danny McCarthy each scored twice for Mamaroneck in the loss.

College Sports Notebook:

Weather Throws a Changeup

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament play-in game featuring Dominican and Caldwell, which was scheduled on Monday, has been reset for today at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Orangeburg.

Nyack College was to meet Bloomfield (NJ) College on Monday but that CACC tournament game, too, has been rescheduled for today at 2 p.m. at West Side Park in Newark.

The respective winners advance to the double-elimination phase of the tournament, scheduled Thursday through Saturday at Wilmington University in Delaware.


Rock, Scarinci Spark Jaspers

Joe Rock of Carmel had three hits including a homer and three RBI, and freshman pitcher Mike Scarinci of Nanuet and Pearl River HS was solid in relief as the Manhattan College baseball team defeated host Fairfield University 8-5.

Junior catcher Ramon Ortega of Miami, FL, also homered to help the Jaspers climb to 21-25, 9-9 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Scarinci and closer Jacob Marchus of Miami, FL, preserved the victory for senior right-hander Taylor Sewitt of Highland Mills, who improved to 6-1.

Manhattan returns to Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale for its final six games of the season beginning on Saturday when the Jaspers host Saint Peter’s for a doubleheader at noon.

The Jaspers are undefeated in 12 home games this season.


Mortarboard musings

  • Sam Gladstone of Chappaqua went 0 for 2 while Josh Mendelson of Orangeburg had a run as the Franklin & Marshall baseball team rolled past York (PA) College 12-4, improving to 17-23. Josh Miller of Briarcliff Manor, a freshman southpaw, went 1-1 with a 5.52 ERA in five appearances for the Spartans, who finish at 22-20. The Diplomats close out their season on Thursday at St. John Fisher (39-10) in Rochester at 4 p.m. Senior outfielder Connor Devlin of Irvington is batting .209 with seven RBI for the Diplomats while Mendelson, hitting .269, has driven in eight runs. Sophomore Daniel Potter of Scarsdale has appeared in two games.
  • Rockland Community College golfer Colby Lewis of was named the most valuable player in the Mid-Hudson Conference. Also named to the first-team were teammates Daniel Gizzi of Stony Point, Albertus Magnus alum Terrence Michalek and Mike Cavanagh of Garnerville, and New Rochelle’s Anthony Siguil of Westchester CC.
  • The Manhattanville tennis team picked up a few more awards as senior Michael Capozzi won the Freedom Conference Player of the Year award for the third time in his career. Dean Tahir was also named to the All-Freedom Conference Second Team.
  • SUNY Purchase celebrated their athletes in the 32nd Annual Awards Ceremony over the weekend. Tennis player Brenden Keeling won the Male Athlete of the Year and swimmer Kamara Lewis was named the University’s Female Athlete of the Year. At the ceremony the Panthers handed out a lucky 13 awards overall.
