 The Top Spot:

The Mustangs men’s and women’s basketball teams will be playing in their respective national tournaments simultaneously for a third straight season.

The No. 15-ranked defending national champion women’s team will tip off in the NJCAA Division II national tournament on Tuesday in Peoria, IL. On that same day, 600 miles to the south, the men—ranked third—will begin play in the NJCAA Division I tournament in Hutchinson, KS. Both teams won District Championships on their home court at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Roc City.

“Our long-standing motto is ‘together we aspire, together we achieve,’ ” athletic director Bert Shillingford was quoted as saying. “Our success in basketball, and all our sports for that matter, is a glowing commentary on what can happen when talented and dedicated people work in concert, including our administrators, coaches, support staff, and most important, the student/athletes themselves.”

Coach Jeff Brustad’s men’s team, which went 30-3, begins play in the National Tournament on Tuesday at 1 p.m. (EDT) against the team that emerges from District 11 (Minnesota, Iowa and the Dakotas).

The women’s team (27-6) won the national title last year as the No. 11 seed, and it appears that two big wins in the District tournament over Regional champion CCRI and an overwhelming effort against Lackawana bodes well this year.

“This team can be as good as it wants to be and that’s as good as anybody,” Coach James Robinson said on the Mustangs Web site.

Sophomore Aivah Parham of  Baltimore, MD, was the Region MVP and Jasmine McRoy of Gaithersburg, MD, was a first-team all-star selection.

Freshman Kiana Letsinger of Peekskill started one game, appearing in 29, and averaged two points while hauling down 57 rebounds, making nine steals and dishing out six assists.
