Several local athletes have already signed national letters of intent and committed to some of the nation’s best athletic programs, so if you or someone you know is about to sign, let us know so Patch can be there.

Patch spent Tuesday morning watching Ursuline’s commit to Lafayette for softball, then we traveled down North Avenue and saw New Rochelle’s Rachel Kessler choose to swim for the Razorbacks.

Kessler clearly comes from a strong family unit as several of her relatives dawned the Arkansas cardinal and white, and a Razorback cake graced the table she was sitting at with her national letter of intent.

With one look at her times from this year you can see that Kessler is a special athlete. Coach Kip Fierro has been with her since the beginning, and it doesn’t surprise him to see Kessler going to a top program.

“She has always been a good swimmer,” said Coach Fierro, “I think right from the beginning she has been a pretty top notch swimmer.”

Kessler also visited schools like Rice, Pennsylvania and Emory but in the end it was a strong relationship with her soon to be teammates that brought her to Arkansas.

“I had a huge connection with the girls on the team, they were all amazing.” Kessler continued, “I love the whole spirit of the school and the feel of having something different.”

Kessler received a partial scholarship for her athletic ability as well as her stellar grades, and she plans on making an instant impact on the team in some longer distance competitions. As of right now Kessler is unsure what she wants to concentrate in, but she can definitely see herself studying kinesiology or sports psychology.
