Iona’s Martinez makes it thrice as nice

Damika Martinez of Meriden Ct, earned the MAAC’s rookie of the week honor for the third time this season. This time last week Martinez was recognized as the conference’s player of the week.

As the Gaels won two of their three games last week Martinez averaged nearly 20 points a game while picking up six rebounds and three assists per contest. Against Canisius, Martinez poured in 28 points in a hard fought road loss.

Over the weekend, Martinez helped the Gaels squeak by Manhattan for a 65-60 victory.

The Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall University fell from the unbeaten ranks when visiting Washington College connected on all four free throws attempts in the final six seconds to earn a 78-74 victory in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action in Lancaster, PA.

The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak, but the Diplomats go right back to the well at home tonight (Jan. 18) against Dickinson College (7-8) of Carlisle, PA. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

The Shoremen (9-6, 5-3 CC) and the Diplomats battled from the outset in a game that featured 17 deadlocks and 10 lead changes.

Senior guard Georgio Milligan of Spring Valley powered F&M with game-high totals in points (19) and assists (six). The Don Bosco Prep graduate also had three steals.

Sophomore guard Jon Salandra of Harrison scored 10 points, with two assists and two blocked shots.

Following tonight’s game, the Diplomats travel to Westminster, MD, to meet McDaniel College (4-10) on Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. 

On the hunt on the mat

Junior Alan Djokic of Somers posted one win at 184 pounds as the Hunter College wrestling team placed third in a nine-team field at the Will Abele Invitational hosted by Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA.

Djokic did not place in the competition, but goes back into action on Jan. 28 in Bristol, RI, when Roger Williams University hosts the annual Metro/North East Dual Challenge.

Also on hand will be NYU and The College of New Jersey.

Competing for the Violets are seniors David Rice of Scarsdale, at 165 pounds, and Steve Massey of Yonkers, at 184.

Massey, a Fordham Prep alum, went 18-14 last season, all at 197 pounds; Rice, who was graduated from Edgemont High School, went 18-10 despite competing at four weight divisions (6-7 at 165, 9-3 at 174, 1-0 at 184, 2-0 at 197).

In Girls Basketball, New Rochelle will take on Scarsdale at 4:15 p.m.

In Girls Basketball, Ursuline B will take on Riverside High School at Montessori Academy in Yonkers at 4:15 p.m.

In Girls Basketball, Ursuline heads to Mount Vernon at 4:15 p.m.

In Ice Hockey, Iona Prep and Mahopac will face off at the Brewster Ice Rink at 7:05 p.m.
