The ’s Allyssa Pechin was named the HVWAC’s player of the week. Pechin is from Yonkers, and the freshman guard had a career game against John Jay scoring 22 points, six steals and four assists. The Blue Angels fell over the weekend to Berkeley 80-60. Pechin had 27 points in the game.
Iona Prep senior Greg Gallagher broke the school’s pole vaulting record with a measurement of 15 feet in his Friday night victory at the St. Anthony’s winter meet. Gallagher also committed to William & Mary earlier in the week.
The Men’s basketball team cruised to victory at Niagara as they pummeled the opposition 98-62.
Two big wrestling tournaments took place over the weekend in Westchester as Rye hosted an eight team meet and Port Chester hosted 12 teams at SUNY Purchase for the 36th annual Tony Carlucci Tournament. Cancer affects everyone on a daily basis and Jimmy V’s ESPY speech still rings in my ears. Years ago ESPN set up the Jimmy V foundation to help fight this disease, and every year at this time the family of networks asks for donations and sets up a week full of survival stories in the sports world.
