Albert Leonard Middle School's New Principal Starts August 1st

John Barnes takes the reigns at New Rochelle's Albert Leonard Middle School on August 1st, replacing Dr. Velma Whiteside, who is retiring.

The City School District of New Rochelle announced the selection of John Barnes to fill the position of principal at Albert Leonard Middle School.  Barnes takes over for the retiring Dr. Velma Whiteside and will begin his work at the school on August 1st according to a release from the District.

Previously Mr. Barnes was the principal of Lincoln Orens Middle School in Island Park, NY, since 2011.  Prior to that Barnes was an executive principal at the Bronx Early College Academy and served as principal at MS 331 in the Bronx. Barnes also served stints as a principal in residency at both IS 167 Wagner Middle School in Manhattan and K 497 (6-12) in Brooklyn.

Mr. Barnes received his B.M. degree in Music Theater from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford.  He also has his M.S. in both Elementary and Educational Administration from Mercy College.

John Barnes was officially appointed by the New Rochelle Board of Education on July 1st.  In June the district announced the appointments of three new school school principals for New Rochelle High School, Barnard Early Childhood Center, and Davis Elementary School.
