Traffic Changes in New Rochelle Downtown Wednesday

The changes will improve traffic flow and access to businesses and parking.

Lawton Street and a portion of Church Street in New Rochelle become two-way for vehicular traffic Wednesday, Oct. 2.

The change is a result of a parking study undertaken by the city earlier this year.

The portion of Church Street between Main Street and Clinton Place will become two-way.

As of midday Tuesday, striping for the angle parking on Lawton opposite the New Rochelle Public Library entrance had been redone. The traffic light at the intersection of Lawton and Huguenot streets was functioning, indicating left-turn arrows for motorists exiting Lawton onto Huguenot.

Variable messaging signs alerting drivers to the changes were placed on Main Street near Pintard Avenue and on Huguenot Street near Lawton Street.

City officials said it was an effort to provide better vehicular access to businesses and parking facilities in the downtown area. Drivers and pedestrians were urge to exercise caution while the new traffic patterns get established.

Councilman Ivar Hyden was pleased with the impending changes.

"Opening these important thoroughfares will improve traffic flow throughout the downtown and make access to parking easier," he said.
