Route 9 Entrance Ramp to Tappan Zee Bridge to Close—for Years

As of Thursday, Dec. 5 and for the duration of the new Tappan Zee Bridge build, drivers going from Tarrytown to Rockland will have to bypass the Route 9 entrance ramp to the Thruway.

The New York State Thruway Authority announced that the northbound entrance ramp to I-87/287 at South Broadway in Tarrytown will soon close for construction work for the duration of the project—estimated at about five years.

The bridge team plans to use this as a staging/storage area. Meanwhile, workers are expected to level and relocate the Thruway offices themselves and the State Police headquarters housed in the building just adjacent to the ramp.

“Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) will utilize the area surrounding the ramp for storage and staging,” said a press release from the Thruway. “As a result, this closure will reduce the amount of construction traffic on local roadways.”

Drivers will be rerouted to use the so-called Ramp E, which begins by turning right after going .02 miles eastbound up Route 119. Drivers passing the South Broadway ramp should turn into the right-hand “jug handle” to loop around and cross the roadway onto Route 119.

Authorities claim the closure will not greatly impact regular traffic and is meant to increase safety for both travelers and construction workers.

“Prior to the start of the New NY Bridge project, the Thruway conducted a comprehensive traffic study to determine the potential impact of closing Ramp E, and earlier this year TZC conducted an additional traffic study to verify its results,” the statement from the Thruway said. “Findings from both studies indicate that the closure will not have a significant impact on traffic.”
