Rep. Engel Joins Gay Pride Parade Celebration in NYC

Rep. Eliot Engel and other elected officials participated in Sunday's Gay Pride Parade in Manhattan. The parade took place just after the Supreme Court's ruling against DOMA, and the atmosphere was celebratory.

Congressman Engel was one of only 67 Congress members to vote against the Defense of Marriage Act, a stand upheld by the Supreme Court in a ruling last week, according to a release from his office.

Engel said when the Supreme Court ruled against DOMA, “In 1996, I voted against DOMA, and I was proud to do so. I am even more proud today that this mistake is finally gone."

Engel attended the Gay Pride Parade in New York City on Sunday. The parade kicked off at noon and the atmosphere was celebratory.

Engel had repeatedly cosponsored a repeal of DOMA. "The federal government should not be in the business of discrimination and the suppression of benefits and rights," said Engel in the statement. "This is a great moment for equal protection under the law for all Americans regardless of sexual orientation," he added.
