Garbage Collection to Change Thanksgiving Week in New Rochelle

The one-week trial will measure the public's reaction to once-a-week refuse pickup.

The city has modified the schedule for garbage pickup for the week of Thanksgiving.

City Manager Charles Strome III said there were contractual reasons for the change.

He said the supervisors are now in a different union than the sanitation workers, with the result being having to pay double time for some holidays.

"Actually, this will be a good measure to determine how once a week garbage might be perceived by the public," Strome said.

One suggestion posed by a city-authorize sanitation study was cutting refuse collection to once a week.
