Affordable Housing Discussion on Tap for Sound Shore

Sound Shore residents will have a chance learn more about and discuss Westchester County's affordable housing settlement at a presentation and dialog facilitated by the Pace Land Use Law Center and the Housing Action Council.

The event—Furthering Fair and Affordable Housing in Westchester—will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 12. It is being done in partnership with the Town of Mamaroneck, Village of Larchmont, City of Rye and City of New Rochelle.

It will be held in the courtroom of the Mamaroneck Town Center, 740 W. Boston Post Rd. in Mamaroneck.

Tiffay Zezula, managing director of training at the Land Use Law Center of Pace University School of Law, said the evening will be similar to one done in northern Westchester County in March.

She the program will go over the settlement itself and how it came to be. The 2009 settlement, reached by county and federal government, calls for the county to facilitate building 750 affordable housing units in communities that are predominantly white by 2016.

"We will really focus on how municipalities have responded and what other communities across the region are doing," Zezula said.

Speakers will include Steven Horton executive director of the New Rochelle Housing Authority and representatives from the Mamaroneck Housing Authority and developer Wilder Balter Partners Inc.

Zezula said the March session had people talking about the need for housing that would mean be able to afford to stay in Westchester County.

"It will be a chance to actually have a conversation about the benefits of affordable housing," she said.
