The Jefferson Elementary School was locked down for a period of time Friday afternoon. The search involves police from Pelham, Pelham Manor and Westchester County.

5:15 p.m., Sept. 14, 2012: New Rochelle Police continue searching for a suspect in strong-arm robbery that forced a lockdown at Jefferson Elementary School Friday.

Det. Joseph Schaller said the robbery occurred in the vicinity of 154 Drake Ave. in New Rochelle around 12:09 p.m.

"A middle-aged woman was robbed by a white or Hispanic male, who was about 5-feet, 8 inches, medium build, wearing all black," Schaller said. The suspect snatched a necklace.

"We've been chasing him all afternoon," he said, adding that, at the time of this update, the search is concentrated in the area of the Pelham Country Club golf course.

Police departments involved in the ground and air search included New Rochelle, Village of Pelham, Pelham Manor and Westchester County.

The Jefferson Elementary School on Weyman Avenue went into lockdown mode Friday while the New Rochelle Police searched the neighborhood.

School district spokesman Paul Costiglio said the police were looking for a robbery suspect.

He said the school was locked down around 12:30 p.m. until about 2:50 p.m.

Costiglio said the school then went through a routine dismissal procedure.

New Rochelle police did not immediately return a telephone call for comment.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
