Man Sentenced for Machete Slaying in New Rochelle

Akeem Lindsay will serve 30 years to life in prison after he murdered his grilfriend, Lisa Stabler

A New Rochelle man received a prison sentence of 30 years to life for murdering his girlfriend during a machete attack last year, the Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced today.

Akeem Lindsay, 32, of 309 North Avenue in New Rochelle, was sentenced for the murder of Lisa Stabler, 29. The sentencing comes after a jury found him guilty in May of one count of second-degree murder; a count of first-degree attempted assault; a count of second-degree assault; and a count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon for the murder.

On Feb. 11, 2011, just before midnight, New Rochelle police responded to a call from a neighbor at 309 North Avenue.

When police arrived, they saw Lindsay covered in blood in a hallway inside an apartment. Lindsay was being restrained by another man when police arrived and the man told police that Lindsay murdered his girlfriend.

A woman who witnessed the attack told police that she had taken a machete from Lindsay and put it under a mattress. Officers entered a bedroom in the apartment and located Stabler, who was unresponsive.

Lindsay was transported to a hospital for treatment of a cut on his hand. A search warrant was also executed and the machete was located.

Lindsay was arrested and told police that he argued with Stabler and struck her several times with the machete while chasing her through the apartment.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Laura Murphy of the Homicide Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Shameika Mathurin of the Career Criminal Bureau prosecuted the case.
