Around 2 a.m. Sunday, a 17-year-old Pelham resident was in an altercation with an unknown suspect at the intersection of North Avenue and Anderson Street in New Rochelle.
Believing the pain in his back was the result of multiple kicks sustained during the fight, the man eventually decided—as the pain worsened—to go to around 5:30 a.m.
Doctors there discovered a wound and what appeared to be a bullet from a small-caliber firearm lodged in his back.
The New Rochelle Police Department was called by Sound Shore and informed of the incident.
Captain Joseph Schaller said there were no complaints of gunshots in the area.
The incident was classified as an assault and is currently under investigation. Sound Shore Medical Center did not immediately respond with a comment.
