Feiner: Ban the Gun Show at County Center

Gun shows at the County Center should be banned, again.

The Westchester County Center, a county taxpayer owned building, will be the location for the next gun show on February 2 and 3, 2013, according to northeastgunshows.com.

Shortly after the Columbine High School shootings--which took the lives of
14 students and a teacher at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado former County Executive Andrew Spano banned gun shows from the county center--calling gun shows at government buildings "inappropriate".

After County Executive Rob Astorino defeated Mr. Spano - Mr. Astorino revoked the ban and allowed the gun shows to resume at the county center. When the gun shows were reinstated admission was $11- with $1.50 going to the county.

In light of the school shooting which - I am calling on the County Executive and Board of Legislators to ban gun and weapon shows from the county center.  Citizens have a right to bear arms and a right to purchase guns from reputable dealers. But, there is nothing in the constitution that requires governments to allow gun sales at government buildings.  If north east gun shows.com wants to have a gun show in Westchester - they should contract with a private facility, not a government owned building.

Among the weapons being sold at the gun show: firearms, knives, militaria military style weapons. An article in the June 20,2010 issue of the NY Daily News indicated that some vendors "sold books and magazines with nazi names. At least two sold stickers bearing confederate flags and swastikas."   There haven't been additional reports since 2010 of nazi memorabilia being sold at the county center gun shows.

99% of the people who purchase guns at gun shows are honest, decent, law abiding citizens. All we need is one crazy like the school gunman whose family obtains a gun legally and starts shooting innocent people.

Ah, yes, a return to the "good old days," like when blacks had to ride in the back of the bus.

My liberal mother was mugged on her way home from teaching at a South Jamaica school in the 1970's, but she didn't, like a typical conservative say, "Oh! These low lives! They're a bunch of scum, undeserving of our help!" She ALWAYS remained a staunch supporter of liberal goals and projects. So much for your theory.

OMG, I was wondering when someone was going to suggest a march on Washington. It worked against the Vietnam War and racism. Isn't a cause to stop more innocent adults and children from getting killed worth a march? And I really want to go on record as saying I abhor ALL gun violence, including that which allows testosterone-fueled men (and misguided women: honestly, what are you thinking???) to go out and cause innocent animals to suffer. Why? I really can't answer that question. Hunting should be banned, too. There's no reason for it.

Another ignorant oaf's opinion! Well, if you were paying attention in history class, you'd know that Sweden did NOT assist the Nazis during WW II. And they are to be commended for their kind help for survivors of the camps after the war. Sweden: now there's a society that actually values its citizens' quality of life. We'd do well in this country to follow their lead in many areas of society and government.

And I believe that it is the reactionary ideas professed by fascists like you that is preventing this country from being the best it can be. You don't thing the role of government is to help its citizens? OK: let's start with not providing all anti-progressives their Social Security checks That's save us as s**tload of money. Or how about not having gov't-run education; let's just have private schools: the rich can educate their children, and the poor can encourage theirs to sell fast food. And of course, we don't need a police force (what a drain on gov't coffers that is!): we can all have guns and police ourselves, put out our own fires, repair our roads, make sure our infrastructure is secure, so bridges don't fall down when we drive over them, etc. You can't get something for nothing. Taxes are a necessary evil of society and all modern governments. Otherwise, you'd have anarchy (maybe that's what these Hatfields and McCoys would prefer.)
