1 in 88? The Autism Numbers Keep Growing

How do we help deal with the epidemic?

The stat is now 1 in 88. That is the newest number for children being born with an autistic spectrum disorder.

Yet autism, even with those alarming numbers, is often misunderstood.

Organizations like Autism Speaks are working to help families learn more about autism, connect families and resources, do research, and raise the funds needed to truly get to the bottom of this epidemic.

Autism Speaks is sometimes as misunderstood as autism itself. An organization that has grown so quickly has its critics, but as a Mom with firsthand experience of the organization, I can honestly say Autism Speaks does an amazing amount of good.

The walks alone create an environment for families that does not exist on a regular day. Our family looks forward to those walks, not just because we are helping raise funds, but because it is a day we can enjoy more easily than most.

Autism Speaks painstakingly deals with the little details of the day to make them as comfortable as possible for people with autism spectrum disorders. There are ways to leave the walk if it becomes a sensory overload. The available activities are great for calming overstressed senses like the bouncy house.

On Aug. 6, our local community can enjoy golf, dinner and a silent auction, all while helping Autism Speaks. The Augie’s Prime Cut fund-raiser looks like it will become a summer tradition. Many work behind the scenes for weeks to pull this event together.

This year, New York Ranger, Nick Fotiu, will be a special guest. Auction items run the gamut, including a variety of signed sports memorabilia.

To learn more about the event go to http://www.augiesprimecut.com/images/sponsorship.pdf.

All the little ways to support learning more about autism add up.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
