This Week at the Market: New York State Wineries

If you didn’t think that you could buy wine at the farmer’s market, then we at the New Rochelle Grand Market have a surprise for you. Every week, a different New York State winery visits the New Rochelle Grand Market to offer samples and sell bottles of delicious, locally made wine. Basically, this is like having the three New York wine regions—Hudson Valley, the Finger Lakes, and Long Island—located just steps from your New Rochelle backdoor. Even better, New York State wines are no longer pale in contrast to the critically acclaimed wines of the west coast. When New York City’s hungry locavores increasingly demanded locally raised food, they also demanded locally produced wine, spirits, and beer. That means that New York State wineries are benefitting from urban interest and dollars. They’ve responded with an explosion in both diversity and quality. Just check out what New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov recently said about the Finger Lakes, a region once dismissed for its (then) syrupy whites. In the last two decades, this New York State region has come up in the world, producing ever higher quality wines. Asimov said it’s now world class wine region. Ellen Dupuy d’Angeac, of AOC Fine Wines, agrees. “It’s fun to introduce market-goers to the idea that New York State is producing quality wines. Asking local wineries to appear at the market is our way of participating in a project we feel is important for New Rochelle, and the reception thus far has been very enthusiastic.” Did we mention the samples? Here’s the deal. Every week, a different New York State winery showcases its wares at the Grand Market. The wines that appear in the market on Saturday are also available all week long at AOC Fine Wines, located just around the corner from Library Green at 268 Huguenot St. See you at the market —we’ll raise a sample glass together!

The New Rochelle BID’s Downtown Grand Market is a morning farmer’s market. Located at Library Green (1 Lawton St, New Rochelle, NY) every Sat from June 1–Oct. 26 at 9 a.m–2 p.m. Contact info@grandmarket.com or call 914-960-1460 for more info.
