In the Neighborhood: La Herradura

Here’s the thing: There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in New Rochelle. Some are fancy, some are authentic, some are inexpensive, and some are very family friendly. La Herradura (563 Main St., 914. 235-2055) manages to be all of the above. In fact, the La Herradura formula has been so successful that the original Main Street branch has spawned equally successful offshoots in Mamaroneck and in Wykagyl. In all three La Herraduras, you’ll find the happy Mexican restaurants of your youth; expect the nostalgic sweetness of frozen margaritas along with piles of salty tortilla chips and buttery guacamole pounded tableside to your order. Yum.

We dropped by on a recent evening after an exhausting day at the pool. At only about five minutes from our home, a trip to La Herradura was better and faster than ordering a pizza. Plus, at La Herradura, there are those margaritas to consider. We ordered two: iced/salted/neat and brain-freeze frozen. Both pale green and powerful, they were an automatic reboot to our day. Plus, they put us in just the right the mood to welcome the guacamole cart as it rolled by bearing our stony molcajete. Arriba!

Tre Amigos—soft, spicy enchiladas dressed in red, green and mole sauce—followed, along with a smoking sizzle pan bearing crackling fajita steaks. A friend, deep into her second margarita, was also deep into a giant burrito. It was a giant torpedo of smoky beef rolled with salty rice and mild guacamole. And although she had promised only to eat half (as some women do), my friend wound up eating the whole thing leaving not one grain of rice.

Finally, after a long and delicious meal, we found ourselves taking a leisurely stroll to our car—designated driver only mildly miffed by our margarita-spawned hilarity. We walked right by the old Woolworth’s Building and past the old RKO Theater. We all (three lifelong New Rochelleans) marveled that, in New Rochelle, some things change, but many stay the same.
