In the Neighborhood: Gaia's Breath Farm

Generally speaking, when you ask the shoppers at your local farmer’s market whether they approve of factory farmed meats, they’ll abhor the very idea. After all, what right thinking person wants to live near a vast, polluting feedlot or eat the meat that one produces, which may be tainted by hormones and antibiotics? Yet, take a look in the bags of those same shoppers at the market. You’ll probably see a lot of greenery: It’s hard to break the supermarket refrigerator case habit when it comes to buying meat.

Well, we at the New Rochelle Grand Market are happy to offer a solution with the certified organic meats produced by Gaia’s Breath Farms. This rolling, 265 acre farm (located in Jordanville, NY) lies snug between the Catskill and Adirondack mountain ranges. Gaia’s Breath raises chickens, turkeys, duck, heritage breed Icelandic lamb and heritage breed Large Black pigs. All of its animals are locally raised outdoors on open pasture and are fed organic food. You can visit the farm—it’s a pretty place to be. Try to say the same about a feedlot.

Look, at first it might feel weird to purchase cryovac’ed packages of lamb, pork and chicken at a stall  at the farmers market, but we feel that it’s important to take that first step. You won’t regret it. And you’ll never find the juicy, natural deliciousness of Gaia’s Breath meats at a supermarket—plus, you can eat them in good conscience.
