Tree Talk: What If My Tree Comes Down?

Nemo is here. If a tree comes down, here's a quick checklist of what to do.

After we make our storm preparations, all we can do is hunker down and hope we don’t hear the crash of a limb or tree. If something happens, here are some answers to FAQs about problems we hope you don’t encounter.

Tree or Branch on Utility Lines

This is dangerous. Call the utility and report the situation, then stay clear.

Tree Falls on City or Town Property

Contact the municipality to remove it, even if the tree was on your property before it fell.

Tree Falls on my Property

If a neighbor’s tree or a municipal tree falls on your property, it’s your problem. You’re responsible for whatever portion is on your property.

Tree Damages my Property

Take photos for insurance as soon as possible. Contact your insurance company and report the claim as soon as possible. If the situation is dangerous, you’ll need to remove the tree immediately and not wait for adjusters.

Removing Your Own Tree

If you have trees or substantial branches come down, unless you are experienced with a chainsaw, call a professional. Chainsaw accidents are all too common. If you hire someone, choose a trained, insured professional, not just a handyman with a saw. Again, chainsaw accidents are all too common.

I hope everyone is safe in the storm. We have more detail on these issues on Almstead’s Storm Damage FAQ page.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
