Isaac E. Young Middle School -- 2013 Graduation

On Friday, June 21st, three hundred and ninety one Isaac E. Young students participated in the 2013 middle school graduation ceremony in the New Rochelle High School gymnasium.  Students processed under a PTA sponsored balloon archway into the crowded gym wearing green and white caps and gowns.  Some students wore National Junior Honor Society metals and award pins.

Principal Dr. Bongo proudly gave an overview of the three years for the students including when the school raised monies for a middle school severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy to the current 100% Regents success rate of the recent Integrated Algebra and Living Environment students.  He spoke about the importance of Passion and Compassion.  Regarding passion, Bongo said to pursue your dreams without worrying about what other people think.  For compassion, Bongo said to find the good in people even when it is difficult to do so.

Board of Education member Jeffrey Hastie gave congratulations and remarks, quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson with "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us."  He told the students to carry their thoughts, convictions and values with them all the time.  He said that the Board of Education of New Rochelle wanted the schools to produce whole individuals.  Hastie encouraged the students to explore and get out of their comfort zone to try new things.

This year's valedictorian was Ana Maria Acevedo.  Miss Acevedo spoke about her evolution as a student from a shy sixth grader to a confident and accomplished graduate.  She said real friends are the ones that love you for who you are and people throw stones at things that shine.  She said she was "proud to say she went to Isaac Young Middle School".  She encouraged her classmates to try new things and challenge themselves.  She said that any effort that they put in, will pay off.

Superintendent Organisciak spoke.  He wore a green tie to match the school colors.  He told the students to stay focused on what it will take to be successful.  He spoke about affirmations and validations.  He spoke about the "mindset for high school" and said they were ready.  Organisciak spoke to the parents and said to "stay connected".  He said "we need your involvement and presence" to reach high school graduation successfully.  He asked for "continued investments" and congratulated the students and families.

Assistant Principal Tawanda Robinson presented awards, including three PTA awards, to deserving students who each came to the podium to receive their certificates.  Awards were given for citizenship, reading American Association of University Women Award, New York State Comptroller's Achievement Award and others.

Retiring Board of Education member, Mary Jane Reddington was awarded the "Emerald Knight Award".  When she accepted the award she said that she had connections to Isaac E. Young Middle School because many years ago she did her student teaching there, also that her sister graduated from high school in the building.  Mrs. Reddington said that her two passions are education and volunteerism and encouraged the students to give back to society and community.

Dean Gonzales thanked the building staff, including nurses, security and clerical.  He told the audience that Isaac E. Young was nationally recognized this year as a school with consistent improvement.

School guidance counselors -- Ms. DeLeo, Ms. Gabr, Ms. Rhett and Ms. Rodriguez presented the candidates.  Each walked up to shake hands with the panel of guests.  The students smiled and the parents and families applauded as the names were read.

Dr. Bongo presented the graduating class and gave closing remarks.  Current New Rochelle High School Principal Donald Conetta accepted the students.

The IEY PTA extends congratulations and best wishes to our graduating 8th graders and their families.
