IEY Students Raise Money for Cancer Research

The IEY student organization and PTA walked in the Relay for Life. IEY 7th grader gave opening speech about overcoming brain cancer.

Isaac E. Young Middle School was represented by two teams at Wednesday's night Relay for Life in New Rochelle.  The student organization formed the "Knights against Cancer" team, and the "Isaac E. Young PTA" team.  The event, held at Albert Leonard Middle School, went from 7:00pm to 11:00pm and teams were required to have one team member walking around the track at all times for the duration of the event.  The IEY student team was moderated by guidance counselor Martha Rodriguez and social studies teacher Marty White.

During the opening ceremony, an Isaac E. Young 7th grader, Faith, gave a moving speech about overcoming the brain cancer that befell her when she was 7 years old.  Her supporters wore  matching black t-shirts with angel wings.

The American Cancer Society event was organized by Megan McGrady.  This event brings back the Relay for Life to New Rochelle from a long hiatus.  Hundreds of participants walked the improvised track, held on-site fundraisers, and did a variety of activities.  Fundraising examples included decorate-you-own cupcakes, 50-50 raffle, origami, and manicure booth.  The IEY teams contributed nearly $2,000 out of the over $14,000 raised at the event.  Activities included a zumba class, a shaving cream event, 10:00pm pickup football, DJ booth and more.

During the 9:30pm luminary event all the site lighting was turned off.  The ceremony included speeches, the singing of Amazing Grace, presentations and the lighting of many, many white decorated luminaries that circled the track and spelled out H-O-P-E.
