Day of the Dead Exhibit Comes to the New Rochelle Library

The celebration commemorates the return of deceased family and friends.

Day of the Dead will be celebrated in New Rochelle with events on Friday and Saturday.

El Dia de los Muertos is an observance from Mexico commemorating the return to earth of deceased family and friends each year.

The New Rochelle Public Library will the site of the celebration with its lobby transformed by a group of local artists for the sixth time.

This year's exhibit will feature an enormous papier mache "Tree of Life" with an ofrenda (altar) decorated with sugar skulls, paper cut-outs and marigolds.

The exhibit continues through November 6 during regular library hours.

From 3:30 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. Friday, November 1, people can come to the library at 1 Library Plz. and create Monarch butterflies, skull boxes and frames to hang on the "Tree of Life" or to take home. The event is free.

There will also be a reception and a Day of the Dead performance and reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 2 at the library.

The Mazarte Dance Group, a five-piece mariachi group of female musicians, will perform traditional and costumed Mexican dances. They will also provide music for the reception and the exhibit viewing that follows.

Seating for the performance will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

The event is a BID Family Day program, made possible by a partnership with the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District in conjunction with the library, City School District and Parks and Recreation.
