New Rochelle children can look forward to free programs during the Christmas vacation week at the New Rochelle Public Libraries.
"Up, Up & Away" is the theme of the day for Thursday, December 26 with a 1 p.m. showing of The Red Balloon and a 2 p.m. screening of the Disney classic Mary Poppins.
Both films will be shown in the Ossie Davis Theater of the main library, 1 Library Plz. in New Rochelle.
The Red Balloon is a wordless 34-minute movie about a young boy who discovers a stray balloon that seems to have a mind of its own. Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, is about an English nanny who charms a household filled with mischievous children. The G-rated film runs 140 minutes.
From 10:30 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, December 27, at the Huguenot Children's Library, North Avenue and Eastchester Road, there will be holiday craft workshops with the motto "One man's junk is another man's treasure."
Participants will create art using boxes, bottle caps, ribbon, paper from wrappings, catalogues and many other things usually discarded. Each workshop is limited to 25 children age 4 and up.
At 2 p.m. Monday, December 30, children's entertainer Jim McClenahan returns to the main library's Ossie Davis Theater for performances of magic and comedy.
The free programs are made possible by the Friends of New Rochelle Public Library and the Partnership for the Huguenot Children's Library.
