Community Corner

The Process of Book Publishing

The Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College is pleased to present an Author and Agent Community Event with award-winning journalist and author Dr. Joan Steinau Lester and renowned literary agent Cynthia Manson.

Dr. Lester will read excerpts from her most recently published novel entitled Mama’s Child, which chronicles the life of a biracial family over 23 years and is narrated in alternating voices between the mother and daughter’s perspectives about family and racial identity. Ms. Manson will discuss the process of getting a book published and ask Dr. Lester about her experience. The audience will be invited to participate in a Q & A session following the presentation.

As a doctor of multicultural education, a NLGJA Seigenthaler Award winner in journalism, an author of five critically acclaimed books and a member of a biracial family, Dr. Lester has been at the forefront of defining diversity for 30 years. Ms. Manson is a well-respected literary agent with a notable list of published authors and has worked in both magazine and book publishing.
