Cartoonists Against the Holocaust: Art in the Service of Humanity

The Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center is sponsoring “Cartoonists Against the Holocaust:  Art in the Service of Humanity,” an exhibit of political cartoons at New Rochelle High School’s Museum of Arts & Culture from January 2-31, 2013.

The exhibit features 17 panels of political cartoons created in the 1930’s and 1940s by leading editorial cartoonists who tried to alert the American public to the plight of European Jews at the onset of the Holocaust.  Works by Eric Godal, Arthur Szyk, Stan MacGovern, A.W. MacKensie and Pulitzer Prize winner Charles Werner are featured in the display, which was developed by the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies.  

Middle school and high school teachers and religious school instructors are invited to a teacher training workshop at NRHS on January 8 from 4-5:30 pm on the use of political cartoons in Holocaust curriculum.  The workshop will be led by HHREC Co-directors of Education Julie Scallero and Steven Goldberg.  RSVP required at info@hhrecny.org (subject: cartoonists).   Lesson plans and teaching strategies will be explored. 

 A reception, with light refreshments, will be held Tuesday, January 8 from 6-8 pm. 

The exhibit and reception are open to the public and free of charge.  Museum of Arts & Culture hours are Monday – Friday, 8am to 3pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-9 pm. 

The Cartoonists exhibit and teacher training program are funded in part by a grant from Westchester County.
