“Elijah,”
a thrilling Romantic-era depiction of the prophet’s tumultuous life, flight
into the wilderness and ascension into heaven in a flaming chariot is regarded
by many as Mendelssohn’s choral masterpiece. He conducted the premiere in
Birmingham, England in 1846, a year before his untimely death.
