Style Contest, Running and Volunteering

Here are some of the activities taking place this weekend around the Sound Shore.

1) LIVE! Project Style: Style Off 2012
Where/When: 1 Ridge Hill Rd., Yonkers, Friday, Sept. 14 at 4:30 p.m.
Why go: Local fashionistas will compete in “Style Off!” with celebrity judges choosing the winner in front of live audience at Westchester’s Ridge Hill. Jeannie Mai from NBC’s Fashion Star and Style Network’s How Do I Look?, and an all-star style panel will vote on the grand prize winner. There will be gift bags for the first 100 guests to arrive, and there's an after-party at Republic of Couture! 

Pricing: Free.

Where/When: 37 Purchase St., Rye, Saturday, Sept. 15 at 8:30 a.m.
Why go: Meet at the store on 37 Purchase St. and run throughout the town of Rye. The Saturday runs offer two distances of 5.5-6.5 miles as well as 3.5-4 miles. Runners will leave the store at 8:30 a.m. so arrive a little early for stretching/warming.
Pricing: Free.

Where/When: , 1 Gateway Plz., Port Chester, Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m.
Why go: Volunteers are invited to join and help sort and package clothing for children in need as part of the 9/11 Week of Service and Remembrance. The Sharing Shelf collects gently used children’s clothing from Westchester’s community that can donate and provide those usable items to members of our community who are in need. They collect new and gently used children’s clothing for ages 0-18 and distribute it through social service agencies, teachers and others to children in need at no cost. They also seek donations of other basic supplies including gently used or new shoes, books, strollers, pack-n-plays and new school supplies.
Pricing: Free. 

4) 
Where/When: 2 Water Grant St, Yonkers, Sunday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
Why go: Evolution Arts, a Sunday afternoon of free exhibits of art by emerging artists from Yonkers and beyond—as well as music entertainment—will be held Sunday and October 21.
Pricing: Free. 

5) Open Blues Jam at C.J. Cullens
Where/When:
 , 77 Pelham Rd., New Rochelle, Sunday, Sept. 16, 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. 
Why Go: New Rochelle's own Irish pub, CJ Cullen's Tavern, hosts an open blues jam every Sunday evening. PA, drums and amps will be provided.
Pricing: Free.

I think it's great that Pamela Davis stepped up to run and I would be glad to vote for her any otherRead More year. But this year we have one of New Rochelle's most dedicated and knowledgeable activists running. Bob Cox knows New Rochelle and the school district inside and out. I'm not sure the same can be said for Pam Davis. If you want someone who already knows where the wasteful spending is, and already knows the district's strengths and weaknesses, then Bob Cox is the person. Who cares how congenial he is? Where some people see anger and finger-pointing, others see tenacity and accountability.
