Scrabble Tournament in Old Greenwich Set for Mid-August

If you love Scrabble, this August tournament at the Hyatt may be just right for you. The 3-day event has competitions for players at various levels and drew 91 players in 2012.

The weekend of August 16-18th, the Hyatt Regency Greenwich will host the 3rd Annual Old Greenwich Scrabble Tournament, open to players of all levels.

The event offers a 5-game Early Bird tournament on Friday afternoon, a 3-game Newcomers Tournament on Saturday morning, and a 16-game Main Event that will run from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday night there will be a “Jeopardy! Game Show,” open to all, run by Jason Keller, a 9-time Jeopardy! champion who won $223,900 on the show.

“The Newcomers Tournament is a perfect opportunity for a home Scrabble player to try  tournament play,” said co-director Cornelia Guest in a release.  “We will help players with the rules, and there will be prizes for everyone.”  Guest will also give contestants “cheat sheets” with the 2- and 3-letter words to bring home after the tournament.  This tournament is restricted to new players and players rated under 1000, and it will be divided into youth and adult divisions if entries warrant.

For players looking for more of a challenge, the 5-game Early Bird and 16-game Main Event attract experienced players from across North America. Players are put in divisions by rating, and there are substantial cash prizes.

Last year 91 players competed in the Main Event, according to the release, and the top prize went to Will Anderson from Croton, NY, currently the #2 ranked U.S. player.

“Spectators are welcome,” said Guest, who added that there will be Scrabble equipment, artwork, and stocking stuffers for sale at the tournament.

The Hyatt Regency is located at 1800 East Putnam Ave. in Old Greenwich.
